Mental Golf – “You are who you thought you were…”

Heading into the winter, you have your physical training plan laid out before you. It is a good plan, and you are excited for your potential for next season. What is missing? If the physical aspect of the game is solid, then shouldn’t you trust that you will perform the way you expect to perform? That is a tough question to answer. High performance in any sport will depend on your confidence in your sport. If you are not confident that you can execute, then you may have difficulty performing at a high level. How can you overcome this?

Knowing who you are as an athlete is the first step.  In your preparation to play a round, your mental confidence will be solid if you are able to execute the physical and mental game plan you have created for yourself. If you know who you are, then you will have a solid foundation to build from. There are hundreds of books on “Mental Golf” and how to develop your mental game.  However, what works for one athlete may not work for you. Instead of trying to figure out what method works for you, wouldn’t it be better to learn what actually “makes YOU tick” and start from there?

At FitGolf, some of our clients wish to know more about themselves and learn how to integrate this into their physical golf game. For athletes interested in learning more about their mental golf game, we introduce them to the Mental Golf Workshop Profile.  The profile was developed by Bobby Foster, a management consultant and teaching professional and golf coach at the University of South Carolina. He is a Certified Behavioral Analyst specializing in the DISC Behavioral Style Model.

The DISC profile is not a personality profile; rather it provides insight into what your behaviors are before, during, and following a round of golf. Most importantly, you will learn what your strengths are during your golf game. Rather than CHANGE who you are, you are learning exactly WHO you are and what you do well. Instead of focus on all the things you have been doing “wrong”, you are able to focus on the things that are already working for you. From there you can build a foundation of success, because these are things that DO work for you. Avoid falling into the trap that most golfers fall into – “How do I change my golf game? “ Don’t change who you are, and what you do well.

If you are interested in taking the Mental Golf Workshop Profile you can sign up through FitGolf HERE. If you are a member of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) you also have the profile available to you at no cost. Stay tuned as FitGolf will also be offering an upcoming seminar that will allow you to take the Mental Golf Workshop Profile, and give you more explanation on how to use it.
