Do you struggle with lower body rotation in the golf swing? Suboptimal rotation can be a result of sway, or excessive movement away from the ball in the backswing.
Ideally, we want to see the upper body coil on top of a stable pelvis and trail leg. A proper coil allows the body to store energy for power, and maintain posture for better consistency. In addition, loading the trail hip in the backswing is a prerequisite for good lower body rotation in the downswing.
Sway can be caused by various physical limitations such as a lack of flexibility, poor strength, or bad coordination of movements. Regardless of the limitation, the Lateral Lunge with Rotation is a great exercise to give the golfer the feeling of proper coiling and stability in the backswing:
