If you’re a golfer over 50 and your ball flight suddenly started acting like it has trust issues – shorter, weaker, and a little unpredictable – you’re not alone. Before you start blaming your driver, your golf pro, or the universe, let me reassure you: the problem is not your equipment.
It’s your body. Specifically… your mobility.
The video we just released breaks down exactly why mobility is the hidden villain behind lost speed and consistency – and why your hips might be quietly sabotaging your golf swing. Let’s talk about it.
The Silent Thief: Why We Lose Mobility as We Age
Look, getting older comes with perks: wisdom, patience, and the ability to fall asleep anywhere at any time. Unfortunately, it also comes with joints that don’t rotate like they used to. As we age, a few things naturally happen:
- Soft tissue loses elasticity
- Muscles tighten
- Joints stiffen
- We accumulate the wear and tear of decades of “I’ll stretch tomorrow.”
None of this shows up overnight – it’s slow, subtle, and easy to ignore… until you notice your backswing feels more like an uncomfortable turn than a dynamic coil. Mobility loss is one of the most predictable parts of aging, but predictable problems have predictable solutions.
If you try these exercises and find them to be too challenging or uncomfortable, do not continue until you have consulted with your physician. All exercises for golf should be customized to your needs after a proper evaluation.

How Mobility Loss Shows Up in Your Swing
When hip or spine rotation tightens, the body still has to get the club to the ball. Golfers are resourceful that way. So the body improvises:
- The spine and shoulders slump.
- The hips slide instead of turning.
- The arms take over.
- Tempo changes.
- Weight shift gets thrown off.
Suddenly, the ball is going places you did not intend. Loss of mobility doesn’t just shave off distance – it disrupts the entire chain of motion. Power drops, consistency fades, and even worse, when your hips stop doing their job, other areas step in. Lower backs, knees, and shoulders take rotational forces they were never designed to handle. That’s often when soreness or aches start creeping in.
Why Hip Mobility Matters More Than You Think
The hips are the engine room of the golf swing. Without the ability to rotate cleanly:
- You can’t load the trail hip in the backswing.
- You can’t clear the lead hip in the downswing.
- Your sequence falls apart.
Before you know it, your “effort” is going up, while your “distance” continues to trend down. That’s why hip rotation is one of the first physical qualities we screen at FitGolf – and one of the most common limitations we see in golfers over 50. The workout video above includes a simple rotation test we use daily with clients. It tells us instantly whether your hips are supporting your golf swing holding it back.
The FitGolf Process: Make the body work with you, not against you.
Most golfers try one or two stretches and hope magic happens. The reality? Mobility improvements don’t stick unless you follow the correct sequence – our sequence:

- Lengthen what’s tight. This creates the possibility for better movement. Tight hip flexors, hamstrings, and deep rotators physically limit rotation. You don’t have to be flexible; you just need enough space to move.
- Activates the muscles that support the new range.
- Integrate the pattern into something golf-specific. Your golf swing is a movement pattern, not a stretch. To achieve lasting results, you need to connect that new hip mobility to real, functional motion, such as weight shift, hinge mechanics, and pelvic rotation.
When you follow this order, mobility sticks. Rotational power comes back and the swing starts feeling smoother and more effortless.
The Plan: TEST > IMPROVE > RETEST (and see the difference!)
In the video, Gavin retests his hip rotation after working through the system and the improvement is immediate. That’s the power of using the correct sequence in the proper order! This is also why golfers in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s routinely experience:
- Better hip turn
- Smoother weight shift
- More consistent ball striking
- A noticeable jump in distance
…Not because they changed their swing, but because they improved the body that creates the swing.
If you’re feeling stiff, losing speed, or noticing that your body isn’t moving the way it used to, this video is the perfect starting point. It gives you clear feedback on where your swing might be limited physically, not technically.
