Strength is a key factor in the ability to generate speed and power in golf. When picking strength exercises to use in your fitness routine, focus on multi-joint exercises that include big muscle groups like the quads, hamstrings and glutes.
The Split Squat is a very effective exercise to improve lower body strength. It’s a demanding exercise that works the big muscle groups in the lower body. Not only will it improve your lower body strength, but also your balance, core, and motor control.
When beginning, start with only body weight and build yourself up to 3 sets of 10-15 reps/side. Afterwards, try holding a light kettlebell or dumbbell close to your chest, and add weight as needed. If you experience pain, stop and seek help from a Golf Medical or Fitness Professional.
If you try these exercises and you find them to be too challenging or uncomfortable, do not continue, until you have consulted with your physician. All exercises for golf should be customized to your needs after a proper evaluation.
